Make A Miracle Challenge

Close To My Heart has always been committed to the well being of others. It is one of the many things that I respect about the company. I am constantly amazed by the generosity of the entire company from our CEO and founder Jeanette Lynton to every consultant and customer. In fact a portion of the proceeds from every My Acrylix stamp set sold is donated to Operations Smile. At every corporate event I have attended there is always an auction or opportunity to donate money for Operations Smile and thousands of dollars are raised each time.
Well we are taking it even a step further with the Make a Miracle Challenge. From now until March 31st the corporate office has challenged each consultant to set a goal about how much money they think they can raise for Operation Smiles. My goal is to raise enough money for one surgery. That is only $240. I hope everyone of my readers and customers will join me in helping make a difference in a child's life. More January Stamp of the Month Artwork

Just a few more pieces of artwork featuring the January stamp of the month. There are only a few more days left to order it as well. This adorable reminder card was made by Lynette Kankamp for our team swap. She wiped it together and it turned out so cute. What a great stamp set to use to send out save the date cards for special events.
The layout below I created for the swap. I made it as a cover page to my scrapbook album. I will feature a few of my favorite pictures from the year.
Finally the last card was made by Karen Pedersen. I know I can't get enough of her art work. What a fun festive Valentines day card. It just shows how versatile the stamp set is. You can order this set online or by contacting me.

Family Life 52 Week Project: Week 3

I have been really enjoying my Family Life 52 Week Project. The kids were out of school on Monday and I took the opportunity to take some pictures of my oldest daughter in her new vest. She found the best a few weeks ago while we were out shopping. She really didn't need it and frankly I had spent a lot of money on her in the last month with her birthday, Christmas and baptism so I told her if she really wanted it she would have to earn it by cleaning out the dishwasher and doing all of dinner dishes for a week to earn it. She enthusiastically agreed. I need to find something else she wants so she will keep doing the dishes. ;) Anyways she finally earned the vest so I thought perfect opportunity to take her picture.

I posted week 1 and week 2 on my family blog. Also, I posted some additional photos for week 3 there as well.

Wonderland Studio J layout

The Wonderland paper is one of the many that will no longer be available to order after January 31st. If you want to still use this paper for classic scrapbooking order it today! You will be able to still find it on Studio J after January 31st. This paper has a great mix of bold prints and colors and softer lacier b&t paper. It makes a great contrast and allows the picture to really pop (despite how dare it was).

We are now half way through the month. That is still plenty of time to get your Studio J layouts completed and submitted to take advantage of this month's members only promotion. Details here. January Studio J class

I had so much fun scrapbooking these pictures of my kids. Oh how they have grown up. The baby in the layout is 5 already!!! These little moments playing in the back yard enjoying a summer afternoon would be lost without my scrapbooks. It doesn't even take much time with Studio J to preserve these memories in a format that all can enjoy for years to come.
We will be creating this layout at the monthly Studio J class on Wednesday, January 20th. This class is online and free of charge. My oldest daughter is 8 years old! For us it is a significant birthday. It is the time when we are able to make the choice to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by choosing to be baptized. My daughter has made the choice to be baptized and I am so proud of her. I took the opportunity to take pictures of her for the announcement that we sent out to friends and family. I wanted to share some of my favorite pictures from her photo session. It was a clear and gorgeous day. The only down side was that it was FREEZING! She was a trooper and didn't complain once. Her only request was that she have some hot chocolate when we got home.

Rock the Block campaign is in full swing! I wanted to share with you some amazing artwork from some fellow Close To My Heart consultants. There is some serious talent among the CTMH community! Check out what they have done: (just click on their names to see their blog post)

First up is Brenda Rose. She took the blocks out of the box to create her gorgeous home decor item. She didn't want the box to go to waste so she made a shadow box picture frame. Thank you Brenda for sharing your beautiful work!

Up next is Christine David. She made ornaments with her blocks. This are so cute! We have a tradition at our house to give the kids an ornament each year and I think I am going to make these for my kids. What a great gift!

Angela Garcia also made a home decor item. She maximized on all 6 sides to create a decoration for 6 different holidays. Wow the possibilities are just endless!

Family Photography Cache Valley Utah

Well this photo session almost didn't happen. The day before we had a gorgeous snow storm. By the morning of the session it had cleared up but was rather chilly outside. In fact the mom called and cancelled the session. She called me back about 10 minutes later and it was back on. I am glad we went ahead with the session because it was absolutely gorgeous! Oh and I must say these kids could all be models.

There was still a little snow on the ground from the weekend's storm but most of it melted so we were still able to catch some of the bright colors of fall. Norris Family Photos

It was time for the annual tripod impromptu family holiday photo. These short sessions are always entertaining. We set the camera up on the tripod hit the button to activate the timer and I run into the photo before it takes the picture. You really never know what you are going to get and who will be smiling or even looking. I don't know if it is the pep talk (threatening) Jason gives the kids before, the fact that my kids have been doing this for so many years or that heaven smiles down on me but we seem to get some decent photos. I am really excited about these. I have such a cute family if I do say so myself.

Can I throw in a few honorable mentions?

There are a couple of great tools that I use every time I make any paper crafts. If I don't have these 3 tools I really miss them. They are the VersaMat (14.50), the Micro-Tip Scissors (9.95) and the new clear 14" Ruler (9.95) that also has guide holes for evenly spaced stitching holes. I also use the guide holes to poke holes for evenly spaced brads. These items make great stocking stuffers for the crafters on your list.

Senior Photography in Cache Valley Utah

Here is one smok'n hot Senior! I love this girl. Her and her family our good friends of ours and it was a blast taking her senior pictures. We had a lot of fun, laughs and even a few scary moments. I might have made her climb up into a barn loft and then she had to get down which may have been a little scary. Just making some memories!

Believe December Workshop Class

It is never to late to get started on those Christmas layouts! This month we will be making 3 festive 2 page 12x12 layouts with plenty of hidden journaling pockets so that you can record your Christmas memories. The class with be the third Tuesday and Thursday of December from 6:30-9:30 at my home. Orders are due the 5th of December so email or call me today.
Each class focuses on different techniques and tips. This month we will be using the Archival Black ink pad and the waterbrush to create a watercolor look. (check out Santa and the present on the layout above). The archival black ink pad works best because it is waterproof and is non-smearing to keep your image outline clean and crisp and the colors your paint with un-tinted.

Easy Yummy Granola

I have to tell you this is the yummiest, easiest granola you will ever make. I love this stuff! It makes me look forward to breakfast in the morning! Here is the recipe.

Granola
14 cups lightly toasted oatmeal
1 cube butter
1 1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1/4 cup light karol
1 cup walnuts or pecans
1 cup almond slivers
2 cups sunflower seeds (optional - I never have these on hand)
1 cup coconut
2-4 cups freeze dried fruits

Toast the oatmeal - put 4 cups at a time on a cookie sheet under the broiler until toasted. It starts to brown and you can smell it.

In a big bowl mix the walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, coconut and toasted oatmeal. Boil butter, brown sugar, molasses and light Karol. Bring it to a soft ball stage. Stir regularly while it is boiling. Pour over the oatmeal and nut mix. Stir really well. Spread onto 2 cookie sheets and bake at 200 degrees for 30 minutes. I put both cookie sheets in the oven at the same time (one on the top rack other bottom). Pull the pans out, stir and break up the chunks. Return to the oven swapping which pan was on the bottom and top and bake for another 30 minutes. Let cool.

Mix in your fruit. I add 2 different kinds about 1 1/2 - 2 cups of each. I prefer the Thrive freeze dried fruits from Shelf Reliance. They have raspberries, blueberries, apricots, peach slices, strawberries, pineapple, pears, mangoes, mandarin oranges, blackberries, apples and bananas. This recipe makes about 1 1/2 gallons. There are only about 146 calories per 1/3 cup serving. Enjoy!

Close To My Heart: Team Retreat

I have mentioned a few times in previous posts that I went to a Team retreat the last week of October. I wanted to share a few pictures of the crazy ladies I hung out with for 3 days.

This is my dear sister Lynette. Aren't we cute together. We sure know how to have a great time, stay up late and laugh until our sides hurt. She is one of my very favorite people in the whole wide world.

The best thing about Close to My Heart is the new people you meet. This was my table neighbor. She wasn't a very good neighbor because she took up all of my space pretty much the WHOLE retreat. ;) I finally moved around the table so I had some space. Lol.

This is Sharon. I love Sharon. She always has a great smile and is full of life.

Sometimes the Cricut machine can bring a girl to tears. Yes those are real tears streaming down my face. I was trying out the Cricut Expressions 2 so I could decide which one I wanted to get. I had just entered a whole list of images I wanted cut, the sizes I wanted to cut them at and was ready to go. I had accidently added an image I didn't want and when I tried to delete it I deleted the WHOLE LIST of images I wanted to cut and had to reenter all of them again. I was crying and laughing at the same time.

This last picture is of Karen Pedersen hard at work. She made a gazillion of these cute advent boxes. As the night wore on she got a little loopy. You had to be there. ;) I think ink and paper just bring out the best in people don't you?

As you can see we just have an all around good time when we get together. Cache Valley Photography - Couple

Back in October my Mom asked me to take pictures of her and my Dad. What a real treat to be able to capture my parents relationship. These are two people that have had an enormous impact on who I am today. They continue to have an influence on my children's lives.

Family Photography in Cache Valley

Three times a week (ok I don't make it 3 times every week but I should) I get together with a fabulous group of women to exercise together while our kids play. We talk parenting, nutrition, life, and whatever other random topic comes up as we are huffing and puffing.
One of the amazing people I workout with asked me to take their family pictures. We headed up the canyon and had a great time playing with leaves enjoying the perfect fall weather and capturing this family's playful spirits. Seriously when you check out the individual shots of these kids you will have to agree that they are adorable! That little man had the greatest personality and it showed all over his face. The cute little red head was a curious little lady who takes her ques from her little brother. Thanks for the opportunity to photograph your family T!

Digital Scrapbooking Studio J: Back to School

School is a great milestone in every child's life. It is a great time to take pictures. The shoes are shiny, the cloths have never been washed and if you are like me you make sure their hair is styled and cute (give it a few months or even weeks and you are just glad they made it to school with it brushed out and in a pony tail). Now among all the busy new responsibilities like homework, fall soccer and piano lessons those pictures could sit on your computer and/or memory card for months even years before you get to printing them. OR you could upload them to Studio J and quickly create beautiful layouts that will be in their albums before they have grown out of those new shoes and cloths! I like option B.

Octoberfest

I have a completely legitimate reason for not blogging for a week. I have been at Octoberfest with my family! My Mom planned a fabulous weekend for my whole family.

We picked and pressed apples and made over 46 gallons of apple cider. My retreat buddies will get to enjoy the fruits of our labor this weekend.

The kids hunted for pumpkins including the great white pumpkin.

We played with our cousins.

We went to Lava and went on the zip lines and soaked in the natural hot tubs.

Yes that is my 19 weeks pregnant sister. She said it was nice to have the baby move up and not be sitting so low. I think she is just crazy.

Oh and that is my 75 year old Grandmother. She is a wild women. Over 700 pictures later we came to the conclusion that we had an all around FABULOUS time!!! I think this event will defiantly be a Studio J project!

We had to work hard to get this session in with the overcast day and loosing light fast. I am excited with the results. This first picture (above) is probably my favorite.

Q2) Name your favorite song? Hum, well currently the most played son in my iTunes library is New Soul by Yael Naim.
Q3) Name your favorite dessert? Oh so many choices so little time. I do love Creme Brulee (even before it was a Close To My Heart color)
Q4) What annoys you at the moment? Irresponsible parents.
Q5) Your favorite pet? Well I am not a big animal lover. We do have a dog, Cooper, for our kids because they were all scared of dogs. Now they are not so he has fulfilled his purpose.
Q6) Black or White? Both. I love black and white photography.
Q7) Your biggest fear? I am deathly afraid of snakes. My daughter on the other hand LOVES them.
Q8) Best Feature? I think overall I have a positive outlook on life and prefer to deal with trials with a good dose of humor.

2. Daryn Norris: Daryn is my sister-in-law. I love her to death. She is so kind and easy going. She has the most adorable little girl and is truly enjoying the journey of motherhood. She is a very humble person who has a great perspective on life. I love having her as a sister.

3. Susann Eaton: Susann is AMAZING! She has not had it easy and seems to be constantly facing trials but always keeps her chin up. I have a lot of respect for people like that. I would probably just go hide in the corner and have a pity party. Susann is also a Close To My Heart consultant and creates the most beautiful artwork. I love her work.

The Passing of an Amazing Mind

Back to School Photo Session with 2 cute Sisters

I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to photograph two sisters. These two were both so fun to work with. This adorable 8 year old is spunky and full of life. She is a good friend of my daughter and on the same soccer team so I get to spend a lot of time with her and I don't know that I have ever seen her not smiling.

This is the big sister. She had her best friend with her. Her best friend and I had a good time getting her to laugh.

After we got all the serious shots out of the way the two friends wanted a few pictures together. We had a great time! They both were cracking me up. Isn't it great to be young!

This month at the classic workshop class we had a lot of fun with the Elemental workshop on the go kit. We created 3 - 2 page layouts. The fun doesn't stop there. The Studio J class also created an additional layout using the Elemental kit. I created 2 versions of the same layout. One more masculine while the other more feminine. It is so easy on Studio J to swap out paper, change colors of accessories and customize a layout for your pictures. So which is your favorite?

Some More Beautiful Faces

This first little guy has the sweetest little smile and perfect little face. Don't you just want to pick him up and snuggle! He was your typical 1 year old that made you work for his smiles and his attention. That said I think we have a few winners.

Now it is the big sisters' turn. This first sister is a fun, full of life 8 year old who came excited and ready to have her pictures taken. She was so sweet and helpful throughout the entire session.

Finally on to the teenager! I love photographing teenagers. They are easy to work with and make gorgeous models with the perfect combination of youthfulness and maturity.

Fantastic Easy Granola Bars!

I have a yummy recipe to share with you today. I can cook and I wouldn't say I am a bad cook but I don't LOVE to cook so when I find something that is yummy, somewhat healthy and REALLY quick it is a winner in my book. These homemade granola bars fit the ticket perfectly. It probably took about 5 minutes to gather my ingredients, mix these up and slip them into the oven. The mess was minimal and the results were fabulous. It is called a granola bar but it could easily be called a cookie. It is pretty sweet. If you don't want it as sweet I would just leave out the chocolate chips.

Fantastic Easy Granola Bars
3 cups quick rolled oats
1 can sweetened condensed milk
2 tablespoons butter melted
1 cup coconut
1 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1 cup mini chocolate chips (frozen)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 pan. Mix everything but the chocolate chips. (I mixed it in my bosh with my cookie paddles). Add chocolate chips and mix. (The reason I froze my chocolate chips and added them last is so that they didn't get too warm and melt while mixing.) Press into prepared pan and bake 20 minutes (more chewy) - 25 minutes (less chewy). Let cool 5 minutes before cutting into squares.

Seriously, forever and ever ago I created this layout for a young women activity. I had it on my shelf in my scrapbook room during my workshop classes. Sandra asked if I would be posting it on my blog and I said I would as soon as I changed the title (It had said "Friend") and added the journaling. Well FINALLY I did finish the layout and I am posting in on my blog.
I created the layout using the Sophia paper packet. I very popular kit from a few catalogs bag. Although you can no longer get this paper via the traditional way you can still create with this paper in Studio J.

My Adorable Little Nephew - Newborn photography

This little guy is my new nephew! I had the opportunity to go take his picture at the hospital when he was just over 24 hours old. He is one adorable hairy strong little monkey. He could not be any sweeter if he tried. Congrats Calving and AnnMarie!!! There are quite a few pictures but I just couldn't narrow it down any more. He is just too sweet.

Crafty Club Night - Typeset Cards

It is time again for another Crafty Club Night! This month we will be creating these 5 fun cards. Most of the pieces and even the card bases are images found on the new Close To My Heart Cricut Cartridge! It makes these cards very fast and easy. These cards also feature the new Typeset paper and the new corrugated Milepost Shapes.

The class will be on Thursday, September 22 at 7:00. The class cost is $12 which includes:
- Cardstock and B&T paper to create cards
- Milepost Shapes (48 corrugated chipboard shapes. $3.95 value)
- 12 Wooden Designer Buttons
- Black embroidery floss
- Use of my stamps and stamp pads
- I will provide the Create-a-shade pearl paint

Please bring your own adhesive and scissors. I recommend for adhesive tombow and glue dots.

I will demonstrate how to use the Cricut Cartridge and will have your remaining pieces pre-cut! You must reserve your kit and seat at the class by Wednesday, September 14th 10:00 pm. September Workshop Class - Part 2 Typeset

As mentioned in the previous post we will be using 2 kits this month. Why? Because there are 8 new kits in the Autumn/Winter 2011 catalog and I like them all and only have 6 months to use them and there is a great promotion that includes a DOUBLE D stamp set so it made sense to go DOUBLE crazy this month. Phew. That was a serious run on sentence. Did I mention that I have been potty training Allie, staying up way to late either scrapbooking or reading and am a little sleep deprived.

September Workshop Class - Part 1 Elemental

I am so excited about his month's class. Do I say that every month? Well anyways I am excited because I had the opportunity to go a little Cricut Crazy! This month we are doubling up and using both the Elemental kit and the Typeset kit and on all 6 layouts we will be utilizing the new Close To My Heart Cricut Cartridge to cut out shapes, 3-D flowers, and letters. And I did it all while potty training Allie! It is the power of the Cricut. Ok really the two are not related and in fact the potty training thing has totally consumed my days and so I have been burning the midnight oil to get these layouts done. But that means that using a Cricut is so easy that you can do it with your eyes only half open and sleep deprived!
Here are the other two layouts we will be creating using the elemental paper packet. . .

I love this paper packet. Each layout has a completely different look and feel. It makes it so easy to use by ANYONE! I have also included a shopping list. All items are available on my website. Back To School 2011

And they're OFF! Yep School is officially here ready or not. I was heavy on the not but oh well. I sure love having my kids around during the summer. I love not having to deal with homework and to be extremely honest I love having the help with the housework! That said I am excited for my kids to start a new year with new teachers, new friends, new experiences.

Here is Brock sporting his all attitude t-shirt. He informed me this year that he doesn't like shirts with collars. I think that kids should dress up a little for school so it presented some challenges. I also don't normally buy shirts like the one he is wearing because I don't like the attitude but this one I thought was actually pretty funny and lets face it my kid has some "AMAZING AWESOMENESS!"

Can you just smell the newness of these bright orange shoes? Calvin, by brother, would LOVE them! I will say that I do like the new cloths, new crayons, new shoes, and new markers part of school.

Mikele spent some serious time last night trying to decide what to wear on her first day of school. I have to admit that I was the same way! She finally had Brock pick her outfit out for her. Brock said he picked an outfit that he thought would get the most attention from the boys. WHAT!! I totally smacked the kid. (in a totally non abusive way!)
Anyways. I have to admit I didn't get much but what we did pick up mostly off the clearance rack is DANG CUTE!

Swenson Family Photo Session

I had the opportunity to take pictures of my friend, Julie's family. What a fun group. Julie's mother-in-law told me she had not had family pictures taken for over 19 years!!! Boy did I feel the pressure.

You have to always get a picture with everyone showing their true colors! ;)

This was a cool tree up Blacksmith Fork Canyon. It was an ordeal getting all the grandkids into the tree.

August Studio J Class: Featuring Stitching

I am taking RSVP for Wednesday nights Studio J class. (I will email you the session information when you RSVP) The class will start at 8:30pm and we will be creating the layout above or below, your choice. I created the pink one then duplicated, rotated the right hand page and changed the colors and focal pictures to work for Brock's album. You can create either or customize it for your own pictures. Please let me know if you plan on participating. The class is limited to 9 participants. For the class be sure to have your Kit, Pattern, Kit Mix, and photos selected and uploaded. For this layout you will need to select the following:

Pictures: 8 pictures max (I turned the journaling square into a photo well)

New Logo

Over the last couple of months I have been redefining and evaluating my business and defining my "why." I also have been expanding to include photography as well. After much thought and evaluation and a little creativity on my husband's part to create a logo, I have came up with the following:

What does iotamaker mean? Well I honestly created the word. By definition an iota is a tiny or scarcely detectable amount. I have found that the little details in life may seem insignificant but often times have the greatest impact. I strive to capture the details and record the journey through the art of photography, paper crafting and digital scrapbooking. I am an independent consultant for Close To My Heart. I chose this company because it offers all the tools I need to record my family's journey through life. I want to help you tell your story and offer classes locally and online. I love photography and over the last 2 years have been taking classes, educating myself and practicing my skills. I now offer photo sessions locally.

August Workhsop - Sonoma

It is workshop time again!!! I am so excited for this month's class. I loved working with the new level 2 paper packets and accessories from the Autumn/Winter 2011 Idea Book. Don't forget you can get your hands on one of the new catalogs at my party on Saturday, August 6 at 10:00am sharp. Read all the details here.
With the new paper packet we are taking our "consume don't collect" to a whole new level. I created all three 2-page layouts plus the 5 cards pictured here.

What did I have left? Just these few scraps of cardstock. I can totally handle that!
At the class you can choose to either create it all or some of the projects. If you love cards and want to make 2 sets of the cards then you can either create only 2 of the 3 layouts or bring some extra background and texture paper from your stash for the second set of cards. You will have enough card bases to make 10 cards.
I have also included here the shopping list for your convenience. I will be putting in the workshop order on the 5th so be sure to email or call me with your order by then.
The classes are the third Tuesday and Thursday of the month so this month they will be on Tuesday the 16th and Thursday the 18th both starting at 6:30.

I had the opportunity to take pictures of this amazing family last week. Their son just got home from his LDS mission and before their youngest daughter headed off to college they needed a family picture. This was a fun group to photograph. Thank you Garrett family!

Actually he should be first. He is my favorite son! Brock is probably the easiest to photograph. He has spent enough time with me to know that the least painful way to get through a photo session is to just get in there, cooperate and be done. His only challenge is getting the smile. He prefers the "I am cool and don't smile but look like I run this place" expression.

Well now the pictures are taken and it is time to get these pictures into a layout in albums so everyone can enjoy. I just have to decide, do I scrapbook them classic style or Studio J style? Hum. . . You will have to wait and see!

This is my very photogenic daughter. I do think she is gorgeous but she does present certain challenges when be photographed. She will have her head looking at you but her cute little eye balls are always looking off in another direction. It totally cracks me up. Never fear I still was able to snap a few shots with her eyes looking where they were suppose to.

You know how I said in my last post (with the pictures of Allie) that I was worried that I didn't have any good shots of my kids. Well this first picture should be evidence enough to justify my concerns. This is my Kassie in all her glory!!! She even asked me how she was suppose to smile. Why smile when you can pull that adorable crazy face?
Below are a few of my favorites of Kassie from my photo session earlier this week that are a little less scary..

Why yes she is chewing on a blade a grass. I did ask her if she wanted that in the picture and apparently the answer was yes please.

Allie - 2 year Photo Session

Can you believe my baby is already 2! Oh and is she taking the terrible two's by storm. Even her older siblings think she is definitely in her terrible 2 stage. Sunday evening I took all my kids up for a photo shoot. I am getting ready for a back-to-school photo session campaign that I will be offering locally. (stay tuned for more details) I wanted to add some more samples of my work for potential clients and I really needed to take Allie's 2 year pictures. I came home frustrated and worried that I hadn't got any good shots and would have to retake the pictures but to my pleasant surprise and the relief of everyone else in my household, I had some keepers.
